Spicy Shrimp Masala


  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 3 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 2 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon EACH: coriander powder, turmeric powder and pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 500gms shrimp, peeled and deveined*
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 teaspoons chaat masala


  • Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add diced tomatoes and cook until they break down into a thick paste, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic paste, grated ginger, and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red pepper flakes, and cumin powder, and stir to combine.
  • Pour in water to prevent burning and stir well.
  • Allow the water to reduce for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  • Add peeled and deveined shrimp to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring to coat the shrimp with the tomato masala.
  • Season with salt, fenugreek leaves, garam masala, and chaat masala, and stir to mix.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander and serve warm with basmati rice or naan.
